From the reading: The Language of Bees
In 1944, an Austrian biologist named Karl von Frisch watched a honeybee return to its hive and do something extraordinary. The bee danced. It moved in a figure-of-eight pattern on the vertical surface of the honeycomb, waggling its abdomen with mathematical precision. Within minutes, hundreds of other bees flew directly to a flower patch nearly two kilometres away. Von Frisch had stumbled upon one of the most sophisticated communication systems in the natural world — and he had no idea yet how much it would challenge what scientists thought they knew about language.
