From the reading: Your Brain Voted Before You Did
Here is an uncomfortable fact. By the time you consciously decide something is wrong, your brain made that call about half a second earlier. Neuroscientist Benjamin Libet demonstrated this in the 1980s, and neuroethicists have been unsettled by it ever since. We like to think of ourselves as moral agents — deliberate, rational, responsible. The data suggests something messier. What if moral intuition is not the beginning of ethical reasoning but almost the end of it?
Vocabulary
- acknowledge a bias
- cognitive override
- hard-wired response
- rationalise a decision
Grammar: Conditionals
- Mixed conditional (1)
- If she had studied ethics, she would be more careful now. — past condition → present result
- Mixed conditional (2)
- If he were more self-aware, he would not have rationalised it. — present state → past action
Discussion questions
- Will humans ever make truly rational moral decisions?
- How will neuroscience change the way courts assign blame?
- What will ethical AI look like in twenty years — and who decides?
