From the reading: Three Ways to Do the Right Thing
In 2022, researchers at the University of Oxford surveyed 10,000 adults across nine countries and found that fewer than one in five could name a consistent principle guiding their moral decisions. Most people described themselves as ethical but struggled to explain what that word actually meant for them. Ethics, it turns out, is something almost everyone practices and almost no one has examined. Three intellectual traditions — consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics — have tried to fill that gap, and each one arrives at a different answer to the same deceptively simple question: what makes an action right?
Vocabulary
- bear the consequences
- cultivate integrity
- face a dilemma
- override an obligation
Grammar: Conditionals
- Zero conditional
- If an action causes harm, it is morally suspect. — universal truth, always true
- First conditional
- If you return the wallet, you will feel better about yourself. — real future possibility
Discussion questions
- When did you last face a genuinely difficult moral decision?
- Have you ever done the right thing and still felt bad about it?
- Is there a rule you follow no matter what the consequences are?
