From the reading: Prost! The Festival That Nearly Never Was
On 12 October 1810, Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. To celebrate, the citizens of Munich were invited to join a grand horse race on the fields outside the city gates. The party was such a success that Bavarians decided to repeat it the following year — and the year after that. More than two centuries later, that royal wedding celebration has grown into the world's largest folk festival, drawing over six million visitors to Munich each September and October. The fields where the horse races once ran still bear the bride's name: the Theresienwiese, or 'Theresa's meadow.'
