From the reading: The Ocean's Hidden Memory
In 2023, researchers aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute's vessel Falkor lowered a camera to the floor of the Pacific and found something that upended a comfortable assumption: a field of sponges, some of them almost three metres tall, living at depths where sunlight has never reached and where almost nothing, by any standard biological logic, should be thriving. The oldest specimens, scientists later estimated, had been alive for eleven thousand years — longer than agriculture, longer than writing, longer, perhaps, than the concept of civilisation itself. They had survived ice ages, the rise and fall of entire coastlines, and every catastrophe that history remembers. They had survived by doing almost nothing at all.
