Imagine picking up a newspaper — or whatever replaces one — on a January morning in 2075. Outside the window, a rewilded corridor stretches along what was once a motorway, its edges thick with oak and wild garlic, and somewhere in the canopy a white-tailed eagle, whose ancestors were reintroduced to Scotland in the 1970s and whose range has been steadily expanding ever since, tilts and disappears. The circular economy has been fully adopted in most OECD nations; legacy pollution from the twentieth century is being systematically addressed through restoration projects that would have seemed impossible thirty years ago. The headlines you read feel both strange and familiar.
