Since 1800, more than half of the world's original forests have been cleared. That single figure captures something that is otherwise hard to hold in the mind: the speed and scale at which human activity has reshaped the natural world. The transformation was not planned as a whole. It was driven by millions of individual decisions — to farm, to build, to burn — each one reasonable in isolation, devastating in aggregate.
