From the reading: HARIBO: Sweet Lessons from a Century of Candy
In 1920, a 27-year-old confectioner named Hans Riegel founded a small sweets company in Bonn, Germany, with nothing more than a copper kettle, a bag of sugar, and a wife who delivered orders by bicycle. He named the company HARIBO — an acronym built from his own name and his home city. Four years later, he invented the dancing bear, a fruit-gum figure inspired by the trained bears he had watched at street fairs. That single product would eventually become the best-selling gummy sweet on earth. Yet the path from a Bonn kitchen to thirty production facilities across Europe was far from smooth.
