In 2023, the Colombian artist Alejandro Gaitán sold a single painting for more than $400,000 at an auction in Miami. The piece, a massive canvas covered in fractured gold leaf and dark pigment, does not depict a landscape or a portrait. It captures something harder to name — the feeling of a city that carries both beauty and violence in the same breath. Gaitán says he paints what Bogotá sounds like, not what it looks like. His work asks a question that a growing audience around the world is beginning to answer.
