Write the Message Nobody Wants to Send

You have agreed to a group holiday with four friends — and the budget conversations have already gone wrong.

Your Situation

You are the organiser. One friend has already booked a hotel twice the agreed budget. Another has not contributed their deposit. A third has gone quiet. Write two sentences describing exactly what has happened — be specific about amounts and people.

There is one thing you must communicate clearly — and one thing that will derail the whole conversation if you say it. Commit to both. Look back at step 1: does your 'one out' contradict anything you wrote there?

Draft the Message

Write the actual group message — 60 to 80 words — that addresses the money problem without accusation, without ambiguity, and without losing the friendship. Use at least one technique from the article (humour, pre-framing, naming your limit).

Read It as the Recipient

Re-read your message as the friend who overspent. What is the one word that would make them defensive? Change it. Then write that single replacement word below — and explain in one line why it changes the tone.
