In your work or business, what resource costs money even when it is not generating income? Name it specifically — a room, a person, a machine, a service slot, a licence.

Sort the forces

What drives the asset's downtime? Sort the forces into two zones: things inside your control and things outside it.

How urgent is this, really?

Mark where the idle-asset problem sits on the pressure spectrum right now. Then write one sentence explaining why you placed it there — not what the problem is, but why it sits at that level of urgency for you specifically.

Low — we can live with it

High — it is costing us now

The obvious fix

Write the solution most people in your position would reach for. One sentence. Commit to it — do not hedge.

Attack the obvious answer

Now go back to Step 2. Look at the forces outside your control. Does your obvious fix from Step 4 address any of them — or does it only touch what you already control? Write the hidden cost or assumption your obvious answer ignores. What would have to be true for your fix to actually work?
