A burning vessel off Oman, three exploded tankers and another downed US drone push the US-Iran war toward a dangerous new phase.
A ship is on fire in the Strait of Hormuz. The British maritime agency UKMTO raised the alarm on Thursday, but gave no cause and no information about casualties. The fate of the crew is unknown. The vessel was spotted about 9 nautical miles (17 kilometers) north of Khasab, an Omani town just off the strait.
Another ship's captain reported the blaze. So far, nothing has emerged about damage or environmental harm. The timing is ominous. Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) said that three tankers had exploded and caught fire within 24 hours after hitting sea mines.
According to the IRGC, the ships were using an unauthorized route. It is not clear whether the burning ship is one of them, and the claims have not been independently verified. Tehran has tried to control the strait since the war began in February, when US and Israeli attacks hit Iran. Roughly speaking, the waterway carries a vital share of the world's oil and natural gas.
