Russia's Drones Kill 14 Across Kyiv and Odesa

A massive overnight drone barrage strikes two Ukrainian cities, killing 14 people and wounding 57, while schools and hospitals burn.

Fourteen people are dead and fifty-seven more are injured after Russia launched one of its heaviest drone attacks of recent months on Ukraine on 27 September. The strikes hit Kyiv, the capital, and the southern port city of Odesa almost simultaneously, suggesting a deliberate effort to stretch Ukraine's air-defence network across two fronts at once. In Kyiv, debris from intercepted drones rained onto residential districts, setting fire to at least one school building and damaging a medical facility. Emergency crews worked through the night to pull survivors from rubble and contain fires that spread to neighbouring apartments.

Officials confirmed that several of the dead were found in areas where drone fragments, rather than direct hits, caused the destruction — a pattern that has become tragically familiar in the war's third year. Odesa suffered some of the heaviest structural damage. The port city, which sits on the Black Sea and serves as a critical export hub, saw key infrastructure targeted in what Ukrainian authorities described as a coordinated strike on civilian life. Images shared by local journalists showed shattered windows across an entire city block and a crater in a road outside a hospital entrance.

Ukraine's air force said it had managed to shoot down a significant number of the incoming drones, though the exact figure was still being verified. The attack came as diplomatic pressure for a ceasefire continued to build in European capitals, yet produced no concrete result.

Trump's WWII Praise Muddles History at Xi Summit

Donald Trump welcomed Xi Jinping to the White House with a personal airport pickup and a bold historical claim: that America and China fought together as allies in World War II. He invoked the Flying Tigers air corps — but those pilots risked their lives for the Republic of China, the government that lost the civil war and retreated to Taiwan in 1949, not for the People's Republic that Xi leads today. Trump also saluted Sun Yat-sen, founder of the Republic of China in 1912 — a figure whose political legacy belongs to Taiwan, not Beijing. Neither leader mentioned Taiwan publicly during the summit, and a $14-billion US arms deal for the island remains frozen.…

US and China release joint tariff cut list

Washington and Beijing published a shared list on Sunday identifying goods recommended for lower tariffs — the first concrete output from last week's Trump-Xi summit. The agreement targets $30 billion of imports on each side. China's 77 nominated goods include microwave ovens and artificial flowers; the United States lists over 1,600 products, among them poultry, dairy, eggs, and silk. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the deal would improve access for roughly 30 percent of American exports to China.…

IVCRITICAL THINKING
Trump's meeting with Xi produced a joint tariff list while a $14-billion US arms deal for Taiwan remains frozen and unmentioned. What does it reveal about US foreign policy priorities when economic agreements move forward publicly while security commitments to allies are quietly sidelined? Who ultimately bears the cost of that silence?
