Russia Hits Kyiv Arms Event; NATO Downs Stray Drone

Russian missiles struck a private military training site near Kyiv on Friday, killing at least ten people at a live defence showcase just hours before Trump-Zelenskyy talks were confirmed.

Ten people are dead and roughly one hundred more are injured after Russia struck a privately run military training site in the Bucha district, some twenty to thirty kilometres from central Kyiv. The site was hosting a live showcase of drone and aerial-defence technologies at the exact moment the missiles hit. Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko immediately called the attack a war crime. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had received a delegation from US arms manufacturer Raytheon in Kyiv the previous day, posted images of the wreckage and wrote that Patriot interceptors are now his single highest priority.

Russia's Defence Ministry offered its own account, claiming that its long-range precision weapons had targeted a demonstration of Ukrainian and foreign-made drones that were, it alleged, being used to plan strikes on Russian territory. The ministry also asserted that senior defence-industry officials and military personnel were present at the site. Beyond the Kyiv region, Russian strikes cut power across five separate Ukrainian regions, and at least five more people were reported killed in the eastern city of Slovyansk — where EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemned a hit on Latvia's Honorary Consulate. Ukraine struck back, targeting warehouses belonging to Wildberries — Russia's largest online retailer — this time in St.

Petersburg, the hometown of President Vladimir Putin. The exchange of blows unfolded on the same day that NATO jets operating over Romania intercepted and shot down a stray drone, with no casualties reported. And late on Friday, the White House confirmed that Trump and Zelenskyy would speak on Tuesday — the first scheduled conversation between the two leaders since Russia launched its full-scale invasion nearly four and a half years ago.

  • Zelenskyy met Raytheon representatives the day before the strike. Does timing like this affect how you read Russia's stated justification?

Oil Hits $100 as Red Sea Attack Shocks Markets

Crude oil smashed through $100 a barrel on Wednesday after Houthi fighters, armed and directed by Iran, struck two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea — one of the world's most critical shipping corridors. The assault sent traders scrambling and reignited fears of a prolonged Gulf crisis. The price surge compounded an already volatile trading day. Overnight, President Trump allowed a set of existing tariffs to expire, then immediately replaced them with a broader, steeper package targeting goods from Asia and Europe alike.…

Trump Targets EU Over Big Tech Fines

A €890 million fine against Google — issued by Brussels on Thursday — has triggered a new threat from Washington. President Trump announced on Truth Social that his administration will launch a Section 301 investigation into the EU's practice of fining American tech companies, calling it "robbery." Section 301, rooted in the Trade Act of 1974, allows the US to impose retaliatory tariffs after demonstrating what it deems unfair trade practices. Trump has relied on it heavily since the Supreme Court limited his broader tariff powers. The announcement came hours after Washington hit the EU, Japan, Australia and others with fresh forced-labour tariffs — a move already met with outrage across multiple continents.…
