Discuss
  • Does a near-trillion-dollar valuation reflect genuine utility or speculative enthusiasm about AI?
  • How might Anthropic's safety-first branding be affected by its reported links to military operations?
  • What does Anthropic's rise suggest about enterprise demand compared with consumer-facing AI products?
  • Could this valuation change how investors and regulators approach the coming wave of AI listings?
  • Is it possible for a company to be both a Pentagon contractor and a credible advocate for AI safety?

Anthropic overtakes OpenAI as AI's most valuable startup

A $65bn funding round has propelled Anthropic to a valuation of $965bn, reshaping the global artificial intelligence industry.

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude family of AI models, has raised $65bn in fresh funding, pushing its post-money valuation to $965bn and establishing it, at least by that measure, as the most valuable artificial intelligence startup in the world. The round, which was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, is widely seen as a marker of how dramatically the competitive landscape has shifted since Anthropic was regarded as a secondary player in a race dominated by OpenAI. Much of that shift is attributed to the rapid uptake of Claude's enterprise and coding tools, particularly following the release of powerful coding assistants late last year, which appear to have resonated more deeply with large businesses than some of the more consumer-oriented products offered by rivals. Krishna Rao, Anthropic's chief financial officer, described the momentum in a blogpost, writing that "Claude is increasingly indispensable to our growing global community of customers, and we work tirelessly to make tools like Claude Code and Cowork more helpful, more powerful, and more adaptable to their needs."

The valuation is also expected to influence a crowded calendar of forthcoming initial public offerings that includes both OpenAI and SpaceX, since the figure sets a new reference point against which competing companies are likely to be assessed. Analysts have suggested that investor appetite for AI listings may be recalibrated accordingly. Anthropicʼs position is, however, not without complications.…

New Glenn explosion imperils NASA Moon Base mission

The destruction of Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket during a ground test at Cape Canaveral's Launch Complex 36A has been described by observers as the most spectacular launchpad explosion since the Soviet N1 superrocket was obliterated in July 1969, and it is considered to have dealt a severe blow to NASA's Moon Base 1 programme. The launch pad itself is estimated to require at least fifteen months of repair work, and it remains unclear whether reconstruction would be faster than building entirely new facilities at an alternative site.

NASA's robotic Moon Base 1 mission, which had been intended to deliver a Blue Moon Mark 1 lunar lander — a vehicle considerably larger than those used during the Apollo programme — now faces an indefinite delay that could extend well beyond 2027. While two further missions in the Moon Base series are scheduled for launch by Astrobotic and Intuitive Machines before the end of this year, both are regarded as considerably more modest in scope, and neither is seen as a substitute for what Blue Origin had been contracted to provide.
  • How severely does the New Glenn explosion set back American plans for sustained lunar presence?

Blue Origin rocket explodes on launch pad

A rocket belonging to Jeff Bezos's space company Blue Origin was destroyed in an explosion at its launch pad on Thursday night, just days before a satellite mission had been scheduled to take place. The incident occurred during a ground test, and no injuries were reported, though the full extent of damage to the facility has not yet been disclosed by the company.

The explosion is regarded as a significant setback for Blue Origin, which has been working to establish its New Glenn rocket as a reliable launch vehicle capable of competing with SpaceX's Falcon 9. Investigators are expected to examine the cause of the failure before any decision is made about when launch operations might resume, and the timing of forthcoming missions is now considered uncertain.
  • What does this explosion mean for Blue Origin's competitiveness against SpaceX?
  • How might repeated setbacks affect investor and NASA confidence in Blue Origin?

    4CRITICAL THINKING
Anthropic publicly emphasises safety as a core value, yet reports connect its Claude model to military strikes and political detentions. How should we evaluate a company's stated values when its technology is used in ways that appear to contradict them? Who bears the greater responsibility — the developer, the client, or both?
