From the reading: The Gig Economy's Hidden Ledger
It is not the algorithm that drives you mad — it is the waiting. Ask anyone who has spent a Tuesday afternoon parked outside a restaurant, watching the app's acceptance rate tick downward while the fuel gauge does the same, and they will tell you that the promise of flexibility is real, but so is the cost of exercising it. By 2024, an estimated 1.1 billion people worldwide were earning some or all of their income through platform-based work, a figure that includes everything from the Bolt driver circling São Paulo's Paulista Avenue to the Fiverr animator in Manila completing the third revision of a logo nobody will ever love. What the headline number obscures is a second ledger, running quietly alongside the first, tallying what the worker — not the platform — absorbs.
