From the reading: The Best Job in the World?
In 2019, Billy O'Connor and Alice Hayes faced a problem familiar to any small business owner: their most reliable employee had resigned. The couple co-owned the Great Blasket Island Experience, a tourism operation on a remote, off-grid island three kilometres off the southwest coast of Ireland, and they needed someone to manage five rental cottages and a coffee shop for six months. On a whim, Alice posted a vacancy on Facebook. Within days, over 23,000 applications had arrived from countries as far apart as Australia and Iran. The role had been picked up by CNN, CBS, and the BBC. A staffing headache had become a global media event.
