From the reading: The Courage to Be Refused
At twenty-one, Sophie Jones made a decision that struck almost everyone who heard it as absurd: she would spend thirty consecutive days deliberately seeking rejection. Not bracing for it, not accepting it as an unfortunate by-product of ambition — actively pursuing it, request by request, stranger by stranger. The logic, though counterintuitive, was precise. Having spent years in a relationship she knew was failing, having talked herself out of every professional opportunity that might have placed her in the spotlight, she had arrived at a diagnosis: her fear of other people's judgement was not protecting her from pain; it was simply costing her a life.
