In 2023, researchers at the University of Amsterdam published findings that surprised even seasoned psychologists: the personality traits that predict membership in high-control groups — organisations that demand absolute loyalty and discourage outside relationships — are not, as many assumed, signs of weakness or low intelligence. They are, in fact, markers of openness and idealism. The people most likely to join a high-control group are often those most hungry for meaning, community, and a coherent explanation of the world.
