From the reading: The Language You Never Forget

Around 281 million people currently live outside their country of birth — and a significant proportion of them share an experience that psycholinguistics has only recently begun to name. They dream in a language they rarely speak. They reach for it when they are frightened or in pain. And, increasingly, they are describing the slow disappearance of that language as something that resembles grief. Researchers call it language grief: the particular loss that bilingual and multilingual adults feel as a dominant language gradually displaces the mother tongue that once formed the core of their identity.
