From the reading: Reading People: The Science of Dark Personalities

In 1980, Professor Robert Hare published a checklist of 20 traits designed to identify psychopathic behaviour. His research, which is still widely used today, was based entirely on prison populations. This gave him a large sample and clear data, but it also created a significant gap: what about the psychopaths who never go to prison? Hare himself admitted as early as 1976 that he did not know how far his findings applied to people outside the criminal justice system.
