From the reading: Same Word, Different World
In 2019, the Irish writer Sally Rooney published Normal People, a novel that sold over a million copies in North America. Readers loved it. They also, occasionally, had no idea what was happening. Characters were described as sitting their Leaving Cert, getting on great, and being gas craic — phrases that Hulu's production team later had to debate, word by word, when adapting the novel for American audiences. The show kept most of them. American viewers simply learned to keep up.
