From the reading: The Sounds Hidden at the End of Every Verb
In the summer of 1969, the American linguist William Labov published a landmark study on how small phonological details — sounds so brief they last a fraction of a second — could reveal everything about social identity, education, and belonging. What Labov understood, and what English learners are rarely told directly, is that pronunciation is not decoration. It is signal. And nowhere is this more consequential, more quietly judged, and more systematically teachable than at the end of English past tense verbs.
