Imagine a classroom in Helsinki where no child is tested before the age of seven, where teachers arrive each morning having trained for as long as doctors, and where the word failure has been quietly removed from the official vocabulary of schooling. This is the Finnish system, which has become the most discussed experiment in modern education — not because it spends the most money, but because it has consistently produced some of the highest results in global benchmarks while asking students to do remarkably little of what other systems call work. Finnish children, who begin compulsory education later than almost anywhere else in the developed world, spend fewer hours in school, carry lighter homework loads, and enjoy more unstructured play than their counterparts in South Korea, Singapore, or England.
