In June 2024, a 22-year-old former OpenAI researcher named Leopold Aschenbrenner published a 165-page document called Situational Awareness. It argued, in blunt and specific terms, that artificial general intelligence — AI that can match or exceed human performance across almost any cognitive task — was not decades away but years away, perhaps arriving before 2030. The document circulated widely in Silicon Valley and beyond, attracting both serious attention and sharp criticism. Within months, Aschenbrenner had launched a hedge fund of the same name, built around a single thesis: that most financial markets have not yet priced in what AGI would actually mean for the global economy.
