In 2012, the TED team made a surprising decision: no talk could be longer than eighteen minutes. Curator Chris Anderson explained that the limit was not only about attention. A short, tightly structured talk also forces the speaker to know exactly what they want to say. For speakers working in a second language, that discipline is a gift, because every minute you do not need to fill is a minute you do not need to fear.
