From the reading: One Pitch, Every Room: Reading the Culture
There is a particular silence that falls in a venture capital meeting room in Singapore about fifteen seconds after a founder finishes their closing statement — a silence that, in San Francisco, would be filled immediately with a follow-up question, and that, in Berlin, might last considerably longer, weighted with something closer to deliberate scepticism than polite consideration. Pitch culture, it turns out, is not a universal language but a series of dialects, each shaped by decades of local investor appetite, national communication norms, and the very specific expectations that come with geography. The founder who mistakes one dialect for another — who brings the high-energy, traction-first storytelling of a Y Combinator demo day to a Singaporean family office meeting, or who deploys Berlin's preference for granular unit economics in a London seed round where narrative momentum is paramount — may have a flawless pitch deck and still leave the room without a term sheet.
