What is an idiom?

A fixed phrase whose meaning cannot be guessed from its words. Boil the ocean means attempt something impossibly large, not heat water.

Idioms are fixed

Move the needle ✓ — you cannot swap 'needle' for 'dial' or 'pointer'. The words are locked together.

Circle back is office idiom; talk later is plain English. Same meaning, very different register and effect on the listener.

Common error

We're all in the same boat ✓ vs in the same page ✗ — each idiom has one fixed form. Mixing them produces nonsense.
