It-cleft

Used to highlight one element. It was Marie Curie that made the Panthéon famous for me. Always: It + be + focus + that-clause.

Wh-cleft (what-cleft)

Fronts the unknown, then reveals it. What strikes visitors first is the city's density. Subject: what-clause. Complement: the new information.

All-cleft / The thing

Narrows or restricts a claim. All I need is a chair by the fountain. Signals the speaker wants nothing more than one specific thing.

Common errors

Never use which in an it-cleft: It was Paris that ✓ not Paris which ✗. Never omit that: It was the food that won me over ✓.
