Impersonal passive

Used to report claims without naming a source. It is widely believed that the figures were undercounted by official bodies.

Passive perfect

Links a present attribution to a past event. The report is said to have excluded thousands of pre-1922 cases.

Nominalisation

Converts a verb into a noun to raise register. The confinement of women was rarely challenged legally.

Common error

Avoid doubling the subject: It is believed that the figure exceeds... ✓ — not The figure is believed that it exceb>exceeds ✗
