From the reading
What one culture calls devotion, another calls suffocation. Dating apps have exported particular assumptions — that attraction is binary, that compatibility can be optimised — into markets where none of those assumptions previously held.
Grammar
- Verb + noun
- Fixed verb + noun pairings carry precise meaning. Encode assumptions, sustain intimacy, signal commitment — the verb cannot be swapped without changing the register.
- Adverb + adjective
- Strong adverbs sharpen adjectives. Deeply embedded, widely regarded, entirely mainstream — these combinations signal formal or analytical writing.
Sample items
- Their shared rituals ______ a sense of belonging that words could not easily express.
- The couple found it difficult to ______ their connection across two very different cultures.
- Wearing the same colour on a date can ______ interest without requiring a direct statement.
