Rhetorical double

Two negatives create formal understatement or hedging. The outcome was not entirely unexpected. This is correct and deliberate in formal writing.

Non-standard double

In standard English two negatives cancel. I don't know nothing ✗ → I don't know anything ✓. Common in dialects but not in standard written English.

Near-negatives

There was barely any time. ✓ — 'Barely' already implies near-negation. Adding a negative auxiliary creates a non-standard double negative.

not un- prefix pattern

It is not uncommon to feel uncertain. — Logically means 'common' but rhetorically implies 'somewhat common, though not universal'.
