The verb to be is the most common verb in English. We use am, is, and are every day. I am a student. She is from Brazil. They are in the classroom. He was tired yesterday. We were at school last week.

Present positive

Use am/is/are. I am happy. She is a doctor. They are here. — match the verb to the subject.

Present negative

Add not after am/is/are. He is not tired. We are not late. — contractions: isn't, aren't.

Past positive

Use was/were. I was at home. They were students. — was for I/he/she/it; were for you/we/they.

Questions

Put am/is/are/was/were before the subject. Is she happy? Were they late? — invert subject and verb.
