The verb to be has three forms in the present: am, is, and are. The form changes with the subject. "I am a student. She is from Brazil. They are happy today."

Positive forms

I am, you are, he/she/it is, we/they are. Example: She is a doctor.

Negative forms

Add not after the verb. I am not late. He is not here. We are not ready.

Question forms

Put is/are before the subject. Is she happy? Are they students? Am I right?

Contractions

Short forms in speech: I'm, you're, he's, she's, we're, they're, isn't, aren't. Am not = I'm not.
