whereas — parallel

Compares two subjects directly. The peacock invests in display, whereas the stickleback relies on colour.

despite + noun/gerund

Concession without a full clause. Despite the obvious risks, the peacock displays fully every breeding season.

nevertheless — formal

Maintains tension between two statements, formal register. The idea was ridiculed. Nevertheless, it proved correct.
