Think of a time you held back from saying something publicly — in a meeting, online, or in class — and use the steps below to diagnose why.

Name the moment

Describe one specific situation where you stayed silent or pulled back from a public position. Write one sentence: what was it, and where did it happen?

What was at stake

Name the two things you feared losing most if you had spoken. Be specific — not 'reputation' but whose opinion, in what room.

List the forces that pushed you to speak and those that held you back. Place each in the correct zone.

Mark on the spectrum how much this moment actually mattered — to you, not to anyone else. Then write one word below the mark that explains your rating.

The obvious answer

Write the advice a sensible friend would give you about that moment. One sentence — the conventional wisdom.

Attack the obvious answer

Now look back at step 3. Does your conventional-wisdom answer ignore any of the forces you listed there? Name what it costs or what it leaves out.

The hidden trade-off

Write the ONE word that names what you were really protecting — not what you said you were afraid of, but the deeper thing. Then write one sentence: was it worth it?
