The Memory You Almost Didn't Tell

You are a guest speaker at a one-day workshop on emotional wellbeing. You have been asked to open the day by sharing ONE childhood memory — something that shaped how you think or feel today. Your audience: twelve working professionals in their late twenties and thirties who do not know you. Write the memory in one sentence here.

From the article's ideas — reframing, nuclear episodes, memory reconstruction — choose ONE that your memory could honestly illustrate. Write it here as a single sentence beginning with an infinitive: 'To ___'.

What you must avoid saying

Sort these into the two zones — phrases that would lose a professional audience immediately vs. phrases that work: 'I want to tell you a story' / 'When I was young' / 'I've never told anyone this' / 'Here's what the science says' / 'This might sound strange' / 'What I learned was'.

Draft your opening sixty seconds

Write 60–80 words — the exact words you would say to open your talk. Use at least TWO infinitive or gerund constructions from today's lesson. Your memory must be in there; so must the one idea from Step 3.

Read it as the audience

Look back at Step 2. Does your draft actually deliver what that audience wants? Mark on the spectrum how well it lands — then write one thing you would cut and one thing you would add.
