Name your two axes

The article frames tension along two dimensions: how openly you discuss money (silent → direct) and how flexibly you split costs (rigid equal split → pay-what-you-had). Write those two axes below as they apply to your own friendships — adjust the labels if something more precise fits your life.

List your real situations

Name five or six real recurring money moments from your own social life — rounds at a bar, splitting dinner, concert tickets, group holidays, tipping. Be specific: not 'dinner' but 'dinner with my team after work'. These are your items to place on the quadrant.

Place every item

Draw each situation onto the 2×2 below according to how comfortable you are discussing it (x-axis) and how you prefer to handle the cost (y-axis). Situations that feel easy to talk about and naturally flexible land top-right; those that are tense and rigidly split land bottom-left.

Read the pattern

Which quadrant holds the most situations? Which is empty — and does the empty quadrant represent something you genuinely do not encounter, or something you have been avoiding? Look back at step 2: do your labels still feel accurate, or does the placement reveal something that shifts them?

The quadrant you avoid

Identify the single quadrant you have never once occupied in a friendship — where you would need to be both direct about money AND genuinely flexible about splitting it. Name one real situation from your life that belongs there but currently sits elsewhere on your map. Then choose one word that names what stops you from moving it — and write one sentence explaining why that word is the honest answer.
